Lexington Vocational Services Center, Inc.
Mission Statement
The Lexington Vocational Services Center seeks to maximize the potential of adults who are deaf, through employment. Deafness is the most prevalent yet least understood of all major disabling conditions. There are still many myths and misconceptions about people who are deaf. These misunderstandings result in attitudes that pose special challenges for people who are deaf in gaining access to the workplace and advancing on the job. Employment enables one to live an independent and productive life. We therefore support our communities to include, not to exclude, individuals who are deaf in all areas of employment. The Lexington Vocational Services Center strives to de-mystify the “differently abled” individual. Our goal is to build a bridge between the business and deaf communities because we know that employees who are deaf are highly capable individuals.
Project Abstract
Lexington will be able to offer a more expanded supported employment program for deaf individuals and the business that hire them. We will match deaf candidates to available jobs. Lexington will provide job coaching services at the job site, so as to assist in any communication needs. Deaf candidates will have more computer skills making them more marketable in the workforce. They will be able to access the Internet for additional resources and job stability. With these computers, deaf individuals will finally be able to use the Internet relay services to make phone calls for health care and any other professional and personal use.
