Mission Statement
U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) provides welcome, opportunity, and security to those forced to flee their home due to violence and persecution. USCRI’s mission is to protect the rights and address the needs of persons in forced or voluntary migration worldwide and support their transition to a dignified life. Through its nation-wide network of field offices and partner affiliates, USCRI delivers the essential services and support that newly arrived refugees need to begin to rebuild their lives. These services include assistance with housing, employment, education, medical and mental health, and legal issues.
Through the Empowerment with Technology project, USCRI’s North Carolina Field Office will provide computers to clients who have the most limited mobility and the greatest need for computers. With these computers, clients will be able to independently learn English through language learning software, develop their resumes, search and apply for employment, and communicate with friends and family abroad without having to travel to facilities with public computers.
Project Abstract
USCRI administers the Reception and Placement (R&P) Program through its field offices and partner agencies. Across the U.S., these USCRI affiliates provides newly-arrived refugees with essential services and the support they need to begin to rebuild their lives and take steps towards becoming U.S. citizens. We provide initial services to refugees for a minimum of thirty days; these services include safe and sanitary housing, referrals to health programs, job placement, and other related services. The Empowerment with Technology Project will be an extension of the R&P Program. Through this new program, USCRI will provide computers to clients who have the most limited mobility and the greatest need for computers. With these computers, clients will be able to independently learn English through language learning software, develop their resumes, search and apply for employment, and communicate with friends and family abroad without having to travel to facilities with public computers.
Target Population
Refugees with the most limited mobility and greatest need for computers, to learn English and search for jobs, for example, will constitute the target population. Many will have a physical disability or limited access to public transportation that impedes their ability to travel. The clients will be 14 years old or older and will be referred to the Empowerment with Technology Project by R&P Case Managers. One hundred individuals will receive these computers. A total of about 400 people—computer recipients and their family members—will gain autonomy through these computer donations.
