Career Collaborative

  • Mission Statement

Career Collaborative ends working-class poverty by helping adults get and succeed at life-changing jobs, making Massachusetts and its families stronger. Career Collaborative helps low-income adults find and keep jobs with career potential through our Job-Search/Job-Readiness Course, job-search help, and post-employment mentoring. 70% of our mentees have completed two years of continuous employment. Mentees have earned more than $7.7 million during their mentoring period (our cumulative are expenses of $2.9 million). Career Collaborative has helped over 1,200 people during their job searches. Programs: All new clients take our Job-Search Course, which focuses on goal setting, networking, and employer expectations. We provide job-search help, including targeted employer referrals, and help clients search and apply for jobs. We keep in touch with employed clients through discussion groups and one-on-one meetings to help them resolve workplace and family problems before they cause job loss. Population: Our clients do not know how to get jobs with career potential and they do not understand workplace norms. They are between 22 and 55 years old. 63% are black, 22% are Hispanic; 71% are female. Most clients have minor children. Goals Career Collaboratives 2009 goals are to place 75 people in jobs and maintain our current retention levels. We consistently achieve these benchmarks: 89% of our mentees are continuously employed for 6 months; 83% for 12 months; 75% for 18 months; 70% for 2 years.

  • Project Abstract

Career Collaborative is expanding our Resource Room. The Resource Room currently has six computers, all of which are outdated to different degrees. We would like to expand our new Resource Room in our new, larger central location, to accommodate at least 10 computers. These computers would be outfitted with MS Office and the internet so that our clients could create resumes and cover letters, and search and apply for jobs using the internet and email.

  • Target Population

Our clients are between 22 and 55 years old (median age is 34), and are chronically unemployed or underemployed. 63% of them are black, 22% are Hispanic; 71% are female; half are US citizens and half are recent legal immigrants. Most are the parents of minor children. In 2008, 17% of our clients were ex-offenders. This number is increasing: 22% of our new 2009 clients are ex-offenders. Seventy five percent (75%) live in Boston, predominately in Mattapan, Dorchester, and Roxbury. The rest of our clients are from low-income neighborhoods in surrounding cities like Brockton and Cambridge. We help 250 people each year, most of whom use the Resource Room throughout their job searches.
