PCs for Refugees Helps Empower Displaced Individuals in Arizona

Simon was a bank manager when he had to flee. He is an ethnic Eritrean who couldn’t secure permanent legal status in Ethiopia. Displaced and in a completely new home in the Phoenix area, Simon had dreams of learning new skills. Without a computer, his ability to advance his education and obtain new knowledge was severely limited. He set out to find a computer, turning to PCs for Refugees for much-needed assistance.

Located in Tempe, Arizona, PCs for Refugees is a partner institution within the Foundation’s Cristina Network. The Cristina Network is made up of over 1,300 pre-screened nonprofit organizations, schools and government agencies providing educational opportunities to particularly underserved communities, such as those with disabilities, at-risk students and the economically disadvantaged. As a Cristina Network partner, PCs for Refugees is able to receive donations of used computer equipment made possible through the Foundation’s technology donation platform. Donors browse from a list of nearby organizations and select the recipient that best fits their interests and donation type.

By joining the Cristina Network, PCs for Refugees hoped to not only secure a donation of the computer that Simon needed, but for all refugees in the Phoenix metro area. Since 2016, 3,000 individuals in and around Phoenix now have easy access to a much needed tool in their own home because of PC s for Refugees’ important work, connecting people in need to new opportunities and a world of new hope. National Cristina Foundation is proud to support this critical initiative.

Organizations seeking technology donations can learn more by visiting National Cristina Foundation’s “Receive Equipment” page. Donors wishing to make a tangible impact in the lives of individuals in need can learn more by visiting the Foundation’s “Donate Equipment” page.

National Cristina Foundation is a nonprofit private operating foundation with a mission to close the digital divide so that people in need can participate fully in a digitally connected world.

  • Mission Statement

We are trying to provide the perfect technological platform suitable for delivering education and the tools needed to thrive in today’s digital age. We strongly believe that lack of a computer or internet access can play a major limitation, and by providing these refugee families who may otherwise not be able to afford a working computer will allow them to more effectively integrate into their new communities, supplement education, aid in job creation skills, and hopefully provide a segway into digital skill development.

  • Project Abstract

We believe that computers are a necessity in today’s world. A working computer is essential to help access important information, conduct job searches, fill out healthcare paperwork, help integrate into their new communities, to stay connected to friends and family around the world, and so much more. PCs for Refugees is a nonprofit 501(C)(3) organization run by a very small group of volunteers aiming to provide every refugee family here in Arizona with a desktop or laptop.
